Water mist system is a fire suppression system which is highly efficient compared to traditional methods of fire-fighting by using less water and causing reduced water damage.
It works by discharging fine droplets of water (1000 microns and 10 microns) to absorb heat and displace oxygen at the core of the fire. It disintegrates the essential components of a fire also called the fire triangle namely Oxygen, Heat and Fuel using very less water and nullifying the damages caused by flooding the space with water by Traditional methods. For high pressure water mist systems, the water is maintained at pressures above 750 psi.
The removal of any of these three components will extinguish the fire. The water mist system extinguishes the fire by neutralizing heat and oxygen, hence it results in quicker firefighting. Water is maintained at a high pressure
The efficiency of a water mist system in fire suppression depends on its spray properties, like droplet size distribution, flux density and spray dynamics, with respect to the fire scenario, such as the shielding of the fuel, fire size and ventilation conditions.
