Hydraulic Pipe Assembly for Defence Testing Equipment, India

Case Study: Larsen & Toubro - Hydraulic Pipe Assembly for Defence Testing Equipment: India

Larsen & Toubro, one of the largest conglomerate in India required a high pressure piping spool for their Defence Testing Equipment.

The requirement was to have a 6” high pressure pipe spool whose flanges could be assem-bled at the site after sliding it through a fixed sealing bulkhead (Hole Diameter of the bulk-head is equal to the OD of the pipe). Tube-Mac’s Retain Ring Flange System was the ideal solution for this case, since the flanges can be attached on / dethatched from the pipe.

The pipe spool was pre-fabricated in Canada , it also had to be third party inspected by DNV for a) Dimensional Check b) Material Traceability and c) Pressure Witness.

The project scope of work was as follows:
  1. Design / Engineering: Based on the customer's requirment, the spool drawing was issued and was put forward for approval.

  2. Pre-Fabrication of Spool: The spool was pre-fabricated at the Tube-Mac Piping Technologies (TMI) Factory in Canada based on the drawing. The spool underwent thorough cleaning/flushing process before being inspected by the Surveyor.

  3. Spool Survey: A Quality Control Plan (QCP) was drafted by CR/TMI for the approval of the customer. Based on the QCP, the Third Pary Inspection (by DNV) was arranged and carried out. The QCP mainly stated the following checks and tests:-
    • Dimension Check of the Pipe, Flange, and the Pipe Assembly
    • MTC review of the pipe, flange, fasteners, seal retainers etc
    • Hydro Test of the Pipe Assembly
The pipe was cleared by the surveyor and then the Inspection Release Note, Inspection Clearance Slip was issued.
